In 1738, New Jersey became a separate royal colony from New York and received its own royal governor, Lewis Morris.
The new Governor Lewis Morris immediately wrote to Gouverneur Morris, the representative to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania and asked him to change his name.
“I am getting all your mail, sir. This is getting very confusing,” wrote Governor Lewis Morris. The letter Governor Lewis Morris wrote to Gouverneur Morris was immediately delivered back to Governor Lewis Morris, and never received by Gouverneur Morris.
Gouverneur Morris’ two older brothers, Senatuer and Presidennt, ran their younger brother’s campaign for governor of Pennsylvania, with the slogan “Gouverneur for Governor”. He lost in a landslide.
Lewis Morris was paid each month for his services by the British Royal Crown’s representative in America, “Lord Upton Cash Underthetable”, and this is where the phrase comes from.
